“A Quiet Place: Day One” Earns $53 Million in Opening Weekend, “Inside Out 2” Tops Box Office

“A Quiet Place: Day One,” the prequel to the popular horror franchise, has made a strong debut at the box office, earning an estimated $53 million in its opening weekend in North American theaters. This figure surpasses expectations and marks the highest opening for the franchise. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and is distributed by Paramount.

Despite its success, “A Quiet Place: Day One” did not secure the top spot on the box office charts. That honor went to Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which added an estimated $57.4 million in its third weekend, crossing the $1 billion mark globally.

The summer season at the box office is showing signs of improvement, although it still lags behind previous years due to the impact of the pandemic. “Inside Out 2” continues to perform exceptionally well, becoming the first film of 2024 to surpass $1 billion in just 19 days.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski and rated PG-13, “A Quiet Place: Day One” has also achieved significant international success, earning $45.5 million in 59 markets. The film has already grossed $98.5 million worldwide.

Chris Aronson, the head of domestic distribution for Paramount, attributes the success of the “A Quiet Place” franchise to its strong fan base and positive reception from both audiences and critics.

The opening weekend for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1” was less impressive, earning $11 million. The film received mixed reviews and a B- CinemaScore. Costner financed the $100 million production himself and partnered with Warner Bros. for distribution. The sequel, “Chapter 2,” is set to release later this summer.

The top 10 box office rankings reflect a preference for established franchises and familiar titles. Notably, two Indian films, “Kalki 2898 AD” and “Jatt & Juliet 3,” also made the list, showcasing the diversity of genres available to audiences.
