Fargo Businesses Assist Aging Couple with Downsizing and Moving Process

Fargo-based businesses abiRiver Consulting and Changing Hands LLC have come to the aid of an aging couple, Amy Knight and Jennifer Knight Rheault, who were overwhelmed with the task of downsizing and moving out of their home of 30 years. With full-time jobs, Knight and Rheault were unable to assist their 75-year-old parents, causing the downsizing process to stretch over several years. Therese Johnson from abiRiver Consulting and Monica Heltemes from Changing Hands stepped in to help.

Over the course of six months, Johnson and Heltemes organized teams to assist the couple in deciding what to bring to their new home and clearing out their old house. They also provided estate sale services, identified necessary repairs, and facilitated the home selling process. The businesses were praised for their patience and empowerment of the couple in making decisions about their belongings.

Johnson, a former paramedic turned realtor, founded abiRiver Consulting to address the lack of services for individuals who do not qualify for state assistance but require help with home organization and downsizing. Heltemes, a co-owner of Changing Hands, has a background in nursing and aims to provide support to individuals in making their homes safe and comfortable.

The businesses work together to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for homes that have become overwhelming. They emphasize the compassionate and confidential nature of their services. The results of their work are described as “life-changing,” allowing individuals to regain a sense of ownership over their space and invite others into their homes without shame.

In addition to assisting with downsizing and moving, Johnson and Heltemes also collaborate with the Fargo Moorhead Hoarders Coalition to support individuals facing hoarding disorders. They work alongside social workers and mental health advocates to ensure the safety and well-being of those in hoarding situations.

Looking ahead, Johnson plans to start a nonprofit organization to address the funding gap and provide assistance to individuals who cannot afford their services. Both Johnson and Heltemes express their dedication to helping people and making a positive impact in the community.
