High School Confidential: Weekly Report on School Activities

This week’s High School Confidential report highlights various activities and achievements from schools within the circulation area.

The Science Olympiad team from a local high school competed at the state tournament held at the University of Illinois. The team won medals in five events, including Anatomy and Physiology, Experimental Design, Geocaching, Air Trajectory, and Fermi Questions.

Students from another high school visited State Sen. Chapin Rose’s Youth Advisory Council at the Illinois State Capitol. They learned about the legislative process and participated in a mock committee hearing on the topic of redesigning Illinois’ state flag.

Art students from a different high school attended the Love for Arts Festival at Eastern Illinois University, with one student winning third place for a painting.

Spanish 4 students from another high school visited two grade schools to teach Spanish lessons to different grade levels. They covered topics such as colors, emotions, basic introductory phrases, days of the week, months of the year, and how to say the date.

Senior nights were held for softball, baseball, and track athletes from the Class of ’24, who showcased their talents in both athletics and academics.

Edison Middle School hosted the Best Buddies Friendship Walk, promoting inclusivity and friendships. The Centennial swim and dive team volunteered at the event.

AP physics students from a local high school participated in a balsa wood bridge contest and placed in the top three positions. They also competed in the Academic Challenge for Engineering and Science (ACES) state competition and achieved seventh place overall.

Juniors organized and hosted a prom with the theme “Meet Me at Midnight.” The evening included a grand march, the announcement of the court, and the crowning of the king and queen.

The high school presented its first musical since 2019, “The Pirates of Penzance,” to an audience of over 450 people. The students and director received positive feedback for their performance.

Various classes engaged in hands-on activities, including making no-bake desserts, teaching science lessons to younger students, and participating in a cookie week project.

Seniors had the opportunity to visit State Sen. Chapin Rose and participate in a mock meeting.

The FFA and AP government classes were involved in educational activities, such as hosting an Ag Expo Day and attending the Youth Advisory Council, respectively.

The FFA livestock judging team achieved a top 10 placement, and LeRoy Life Students received surprise yard signs for their upcoming talent event.

Economics classes ran their own cookie businesses as part of a project, learning about entrepreneurship and donating proceeds to charity.

Students participated in a radio public service announcement contest, with winners having their entries recorded and played on the radio.

Accounting class students competed in the Illinois State Accounting Challenge, with one team achieving first place.

Students engaged in various community service activities, including weeding the school courtyard, participating in a CEO program, and providing food bags to students in need.

The week also included events such as a blood drive, a mock car crash to promote safe driving, and a spring concert featuring the school bands and Singing Toppers.

The Constitution team traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete at the national finals and visited several historical sites.

Prom court members were announced and crowned, and the school’s esports team secured first place at sectionals.

The boys’ track team and baseball team achieved success in their respective competitions.

Elementary Principal Morgan Wilhoit initiated a program to provide food bags to students in need, with monthly deliveries to 140 students.

Overall, it was a busy and eventful week for the schools within the circulation area.
