Liam Paro Defeats Subriel Matias to Claim IBF Junior Welterweight Title in Puerto Rico

Liam Paro, an Australian southpaw, secured a unanimous decision victory over Subriel Matias to become the new IBF junior welterweight titleholder. The fight took place at Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico on June 15. Paro, who was considered an underdog, executed a well-planned game plan devised by his coach, Alfie Di Carlo. Despite facing a formidable opponent with a reputation for knockout victories, Paro showcased his boxing skills and controlled the pace of the fight. The judges scored the bout 116-111, 115-112, and 115-112 in favor of Paro.

Paro’s victory came as a surprise to many, as he was unranked by The Ring and had limited activity in the past two-and-a-half years. Matias, known for his punching power and high punch output, had a strong record with only one loss. The fight took place in Matias’ home country, adding to the challenge for Paro. However, he remained focused and executed his game plan flawlessly.

Despite facing adversity, including a point deduction and a hostile crowd, Paro remained composed and displayed a strong mental game. The victory opens up opportunities for Paro to defend his title in Australia, with hopes of attracting big-name opponents. Paro expressed his desire to bring significant fights to his home country and is willing to face any opponent with a belt.
