NBC Announces Changes to Coverage of 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

NBC has revealed its plans for the coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, signaling a departure from its previous approach. The network aims to provide viewers with more choice and a personalized experience. One of the key changes is the introduction of two daily Olympics shows hosted by Mike Tirico. The first show will coincide with prime-time in Paris and feature live competition in popular sports such as swimming, gymnastics, and track & field. The second show, airing during prime-time hours in the United States, will offer a curated view of the day’s best action.

In a bid to cater to the preferences of viewers, NBC’s affiliated streaming service, Peacock, will broadcast every Olympic competition live. The network plans to leverage Peacock’s features, including personalized highlights packages generated by artificial intelligence. Users will have the ability to select their favorite sports and the type of action they want to see, with AI delivering customized highlight packages. These packages will be narrated by an AI-generated model of Al Michaels’ voice.

NBC also intends to enhance its coverage by focusing on athlete profiles and featuring celebrities. Notable personalities like Snoop Dogg, Kelly Clarkson, Peyton Manning, and Jimmy Fallon will be part of the coverage. Additionally, “Saturday Night Live” actor Colin Jost will contribute to the coverage of surfing from Tahiti. To add a storytelling element, renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg will narrate a short film titled “Land of Stories,” which will be shown before the Olympics opening ceremonies.

Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Universal Media Group, acknowledged past shortcomings in NBC’s Olympics offerings on Peacock and promised significant improvements for this year’s coverage. The network aims to create a unique viewing experience that combines elements of reality shows, comedy, and drama.
