Zach Edey Withdraws from Consideration for Canada’s 2024 Olympic Basketball Team

Memphis Grizzlies’ newly acquired center, Zach Edey, has announced his decision to withdraw his name from consideration for Canada’s basketball team in the 2024 Paris Games. Edey, who was selected ninth overall by the Grizzlies, made history by becoming the first player in over 40 years to win The Associated Press’ men’s college basketball player of the year award in consecutive seasons while playing for Purdue.

In a statement, the 7-foot-4 Edey expressed that it was a difficult decision for him not to compete for a spot in the Paris Games. He emphasized his commitment to preparing for his NBA career, stating that he has been training relentlessly since last summer to pursue a national title at Purdue and succeed in the NBA.

Edey acknowledged that representing Canada remains a dream, and he will continue to support the team as their biggest fan. Rowan Barrett, the general manager of Canada Basketball’s senior men’s program, confirmed that they were informed of Edey’s decision not to be considered for the Olympic team. Barrett expressed understanding and support for Edey’s difficult choice and looks forward to having him at a future training camp.

Edey’s decision adds to the list of players who will not be available for Canada’s roster in the 2024 Olympics. Golden State Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins has also been blocked from competing in Paris, according to Barrett. However, the Warriors countered, stating that it was a mutual decision between the team and Wiggins. Wiggins was among the 20 players invited to the camp to determine the Olympic roster.

As one of the tallest players in the NBA, Edey will aim to prove his skills and adaptability to the league in the upcoming season. In the 2023-24 season, only three players, including San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama, Houston’s Boban Marjanovic, and Phoenix’s Bol Bol, were listed at 7-foot-3 or taller.
