South Korean Actor Lee Sun-kyun Found Dead in Car in Seoul

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, known for his role in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” was found dead in a car in Seoul on Wednesday. Police and emergency officers initially discovered Lee in an unconscious state in a parked car in northern Seoul. Emergency officers later confirmed his death. Lee, 48, had been reported missing by his family earlier in the day, who also informed the police about a message resembling a suicide note.

Lee gained international recognition for his role in “Parasite,” which won four Oscars, including Best Picture, in 2020. He played the head of a wealthy family in the film. Prior to “Parasite,” Lee had been a popular actor in South Korea, starring in various TV dramas and films.

Lee had been under investigation by the police for alleged drug use. He claimed to have been tricked into taking illegal drugs and filed a lawsuit against two individuals, including a bar hostess, accusing them of blackmail. The investigation into Lee’s drug use has attracted significant media attention and online rumors about his private life.

Incheon police announced the conclusion of their investigation into Lee’s case but stated that they would continue to investigate the individuals he had sued. South Korea has strict anti-drug laws and has seen a rise in drug-related offenses in recent years.

Lee’s death comes amid South Korea’s ongoing struggle with high suicide rates, particularly among celebrities. The country has also faced issues of cyberbullying and malicious online comments, which have been linked to several celebrity suicides.

Lee is survived by his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and their two sons.
