Finland Considers Closing Eastern Border Crossings with Russia to Curb Illegal Entries

Finland’s Ministry of the Interior is contemplating the closure of specific crossing points on its eastern border with Russia in an effort to prevent illegal entries into the country. The ministry has accused Russia of allowing individuals to cross the border without proper documentation, leading to a significant increase in the number of asylum seekers at the eastern border in recent months.

In 2022, Finland implemented changes to its legislation, granting the government the authority to impose restrictions on border crossings, close border crossing points, and centralize asylum applications. In line with these amendments, the Ministry of the Interior has proposed new restriction measures.

Although the number of asylum seekers remains relatively low, authorities have expressed concern over a sharp rise since August 2023. The majority of these individuals have crossed through Russia from a third country. Finnish authorities claim that Russian border officials have altered their behavior, allowing people to pass without proper documents. They argue that these crossings are linked to international crime.

Riikka Purra, the Finnish Finance Minister, emphasized that the decision is not solely based on the number of asylum seekers but also on Finland’s national security and the change in Russia’s activities. Interior Minister Mari Rantanen stated that the situation is being closely monitored, and the government is prepared to utilize all legislative powers to ensure border security if necessary.

Russia has yet to respond to Finland’s proposal.
