Generative AI Disrupts Music as Artists Embrace Co-Creation

The democratization of music has shifted power from record labels to artists, leading to an evolution of creativity in response to rapidly evolving technologies and fan expectations. Artists are embracing co-creation, genre fusion, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to reach unprecedented levels of output. Additionally, AI is playing a significant role in driving music production, personalized recommendations, and new collaborations.

Grimes, the award-winning singer and songwriter known for her albums “Visions,” “Art Angels,” and “Miss Anthropocene,” has been at the forefront of this movement. She has invited fans to co-create music using generative AI and her intellectual property (IP). Grimes collaborates with CreateSafe, an applied research studio based in Los Angeles, to build tools and protocols for artists to automate the creation, distribution, and marketing of music IP. Together, they are developing Triniti API, a generative AI music production platform that enables artists to create and distribute music.

One example of this collaboration is Australian DJ and producer Kito, who used Grimes’ AI platform, Elf.tech, to create a song called “Cold Touch” featuring Grimes’ voice. Kito expressed how using AI for music creation provided new opportunities for creativity. Grimes’ partnership with CreateSafe allows rights-holders of music IP to license their assets, name, image, and likeness for pay when their data is used in Triniti’s models. Artists can then distribute their work through popular streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple, and Tidal.

CreateSafe recently partnered with Slip.stream, a music technology platform that provides a licensing platform for its users to download and safely use tracks and sound effects from leading labels and artists. This partnership enables Slip.stream creators to choose from over 200 GrimesAI tracks and incorporate them into their videos, posts, live streams, and podcasts on any platform. Slip.stream’s AI tools also enhance creativity by offering features like an AI-powered Video Soundtrack Genie and an AI Song Extender.

Daouda Leonard, the co-founder and CEO of CreateSafe, highlights the transformative potential of AI in various industries. He emphasizes the combination of user-generated content and technologies like AI, VR, and cloud computing, which can lead to entirely new art forms and industries. Grimes’ constant exploration of technology’s role in art has driven her collaborations and innovations.

The partnership between CreateSafe and Slip.stream is not only expanding creative opportunities for artists but also reversing the traditional label-publisher dynamic in the music industry. By increasing discoverability and allowing creators to safely monetize their content, Slip.stream is enabling musicians to tap into the growing creator economy at an unprecedented scale.

In conclusion, as generative AI disrupts the music industry, artists like Grimes are embracing co-creation and collaborating with technology platforms to explore new creative possibilities. The democratization of music and the integration of AI are reshaping the industry, empowering artists, and providing new avenues for fan engagement and monetization.
