Raleigh-Durham Airport Experiences Surge in Passenger Traffic, Prepares for Summer Travel Season

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) witnessed a significant increase in passenger traffic during March, with over 1.2 million travelers passing through its gates. This marked a 24.7 percent rise compared to February 2024 and a 6.9 percent increase compared to March 2023. The surge in passenger traffic during spring break vacations indicates a busy summer travel season ahead, according to Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority.

To cater to the growing demand, RDU is expanding its air travel options. In June, Lufthansa will commence service to Frankfurt, Germany, while Copa Airlines will offer nonstop flights to Panama City. Additionally, Aeromexico will launch nonstop flights to Mexico City in July. Frontier Airlines has also expanded its services, introducing nonstop flights to Boston, Miami, Tampa, New York-LaGuardia, and Chicago-O’Hare.

RDU is undergoing a transformation to enhance the travel experience for visitors. The “Reimagine RDU” campaign promises new airport amenities, including dining options curated by renowned chefs and cutting-edge technology to streamline the travel process. More information about these enhancements can be found at www.rdu.com/reimagine.

Sun Country Airlines has relocated its operations to Terminal 1 at RDU, optimizing gate space across both terminals and preparing for further expansion. Passengers traveling to Terminal 2 can conveniently traverse back through the parking deck in under five minutes. Breeze Airways also transitioned to Terminal 1 earlier this month.

In a recent decision, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board has introduced a public comment period during regularly scheduled board meetings, starting from May 2024. This change aligns with the Public Comments Rules and allows for increased public engagement. For more details on the adjustments made, refer to Chapter 6 of the Authority’s local laws.

As RDU continues to evolve and accommodate the needs of the region, it anticipates a busy summer travel season with new international flights, expanded services, and improved amenities for travelers.
