Ties Between India and the United States Face Test Amidst Assassination Plot Accusations

The relationship between India and the United States, which was hailed as “more dynamic than at any time in history” during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit in June, is facing a significant challenge. U.S. prosecutors have accused an Indian official of directing a plot to assassinate a prominent Sikh separatist leader residing in New York City. This accusation follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of Indian government involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist near Vancouver in June.

According to an unsealed indictment, U.S. officials discovered a plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an American citizen advocating for a sovereign Sikh state. The plot, which was foiled by U.S. authorities, was intended to be the first in a series of politically motivated killings in the United States and Canada. Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, faces charges including murder for hire, while the Indian official involved has not been charged or identified by name.

The accusations have raised concerns about the impact on India-U.S. ties, particularly given the importance President Joe Biden has placed on strengthening the relationship. The response from India has differed in its approach to Canada and the United States. While India exchanged harsh words with Canada and refuted Trudeau’s claims, it has taken a more cooperative stance with the U.S. India’s foreign ministry has established a high-level committee to investigate the accusations and has expressed concern over the alleged link to an Indian official, stating it goes against government policy.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has emphasized that the matter is an ongoing legal issue and expressed the U.S. government’s seriousness in addressing it. The Biden administration has continued engagement with India despite the plot, highlighting the importance of the partnership. However, analysts suggest that navigating the diplomatic challenges ahead will be crucial for both countries, as the U.S. cannot overlook such a shocking alleged act, and India remains committed to addressing security threats.

The impact on India-U.S. ties may become clearer in January, as India has invited President Biden to be the chief guest at its Republic Day parade. If President Biden accepts, it could provide a confidence boost to the relationship. However, if he declines, it may be seen as a possible snub or an indication that the U.S. is not ready to move on from the accusations just yet.
